Fix worn-out thumbstick pads, replace the thumbstick springs, or replace the analog stick. Jump to a Section.

In this short but somehow very wordy instructable I will hopefully be able to explain why stick drift happens and an alternative solution to fixing it by using an overkill mod! Lets get started! Before I dive into the details I would like to reiterate that this mod was mainly to prove an idea and while it works as intended it is complete overkill since replacing the drifting stick or parts of it usually remedies the issue. This was a fun project and I felt like sharing the results as it could be improved upon in the future! Stick drift happens as the resistance of the analog sticks potentiometers change over time or in some cases right out of the factory. The resistance can change due to use, break down of the material inside the potentiometer or just by being unbalanced. This mod uses external pots that are wired in parallel with the stick pots wipers that allows for the overall resistance to be calibrated by using the magic of parallel resistance for a perfect stick.

Joy-cons, gamepads, controllers—they're known by many names and come in many forms. However, they all eventually run into the same problem: joystick drift. In most cases, the problem gets so bad that you eventually have to scrap the controller and get a new one. But what exactly is joystick drift? And if the problem is so prominent, why hasn't it been fixed yet? Game controllers have a variety of parts and components, but the ones we usually interact with the most are the joysticks. Everything you do, from moving around in the menus to controlling your character in-game, can be achieved using the joysticks. These joysticks themselves are made up of certain components, but the main attraction here is the potentiometer, otherwise called the pot. The pot is a variable resistor that outputs a different voltage based on its position. Joysticks have two pots, one for the X-axis left and right and another for the Y-axis up and down. The pot is a mechanical device that changes the voltage that passes through it by making contact with a resistive strip. Over time, this strip wears out, causing the pot to fluctuate its voltage output, even when it's centered. If this value is different every time, your controller registers that as an input, and that's what joystick drift looks like at its most basic level. Of course, other components in the pot, like railings and centering springs, can also fail over time and introduce drift in your controller. Remember that these voltages must be very precise to detect accurate movement.

I used surface mount pots for the board I installed simply because the overall foot print is smaller and requires no modification to controller joystick drift where as if you used bigger through hole pots you may have to get creative with where you place the board, controller joystick drift. Keeping your controllers clean is the first thing you should do. What Is Joystick Drift?

Growing up, I have always played Xbox, and one problem that I've consistently had has to do with the joysticks of the controllers. If not feel free to ask any questions. I did design a board for this that could be sold as a kit which would make an install a breeze but I'm not sure if that is worth the effort yet. In This Article Expand. Check the thumbsticks to see if they're positioned correctly, and try wiggling them to see if they're loose. Of course, other components in the pot, like railings and centering springs, can also fail over time and introduce drift in your controller. Therefore, pots produce an analog signal that's converted to a digital signal and sent to your console or PC for further processing.

Since the release of the PS5, owners of the console have noticed an unfortunate defect with the DualSense controller.

Anything that messes with your pot's precision can introduce joystick drift. For starters, joystick drift introduces random input and jitteriness in your controller. Although it may seem intimidating at first, changing out the joysticks on a controller is simple enough once the information is digested. If only one thumbstick is giving you trouble, only replace the springs on that thumbstick. Check the battery contacts, which should extend at an angle. Additionally, we recommend not snacking while gaming. Windows and consoles alike offer in-built calibration tools that recalibrate the pot input to eliminate drift.
