A bridge has a parabolic arch that is 10 m high in the centre and 30 m wide at the bottom. Find the height of the arch 6 m from the centre, on either sides. A tunnel through a mountain for a four lane highway is to have a elliptical opening. The total width of the highway not the opening is to be 16 m , and the height at the edge of the road must be sufficient for a truck 4 m high to clear if the highest point of the opening is to be 5 m approximately. How wide must the opening be? At a water fountain, water attains a maximum height of 4 m at horizontal distance of 0. If the path of water is a parabola, find the height of water at a horizontal distance of 0. An engineer designs a satellite dish with a parabolic cross section. The dish is 5 m wide at the opening, and the focus is placed 1. Parabolic cable of a 60 m portion of the roadbed of a suspension bridge are positioned as shown below. Vertical Cables are to be spaced every 6 m along this portion of the roadbed. Calculate the lengths of first two of these vertical cables from the vertex. Cross section of a Nuclear cooling tower is in the shape of a hyperbola with equation.

Conic Sections Applications Math Lib Activity Students will practice solving real life applications involving conic sections with this "Math Lib" activity. This activity includes 1 circle question, 3 ellipse questions, 3 hyperbola questions, and 3 parabola questions. Students must be able to write the equation of a conic given various information including eccentricity and use the equation to solve for a certain part. The answer at each of the 10 stations will give them a piece to a story who, doing what, with who, where, when, etc. This is a much more fun approach to multiple choice, and the students adore reading the story to the class. They get very excited to see which of their teachers is the "star" of the story. All slides are given in an editable format so you are free to personalize the story for your students. PowerPoint is required to edit. Only story elements can be changed, not the actual problems.

For the first question, we should take the information we were given to turn the parabola into the form. As the problem doesn't place the parabola at a specific location in a coordinate grid, we can assume the vertex is at 0,0. We can solve for a given the information in the problem.
