Too sweet tasting curries, far away from india cuisine.

Chatora in Richmond offers superb food, but watch out, it can be hot hot hot, writes Pippa Duncan. Walking into Chatora made me feel old. There have been various restaurants in this spot on Kew Road for years and it must be more than 30 years ago when it was the Italian, Prego. Does anyone remember Prego? We were there all the time.

Chatora, which opened at the end of December , is blessed with a capable and experienced kitchen team. The restaurant is in a parade of shops on Kew Road in Richmond, the restaurant split into several small dining rooms. The menu showcases the food of northern India. Aloo papdi chaat is a classic street food dish, with potato, chickpeas, yoghurt, crunchy sev thin gram flour noodles , papdi whole wheat crackers , flavoured with sweet tamarind chutney and spices. Angare chicken tikka had been marinated with yoghurt, chilli and ginger and was exceptionally tender, the spices blended carefully. Chicken biryani was served in a copper pan with its pastry seal, which was duly cut open at the table to release the aromas of the spices that had been cooking with the rice and chicken pieces. Pahadi chicken curry is a dish from the mountains of northern India, whose sauce involves cloves, ginger, garlic and fennel seeds amongst other spices. Service was good and the pace of dishes was fine, even on this completely full service. Chatora is producing genuinely classy Indian food, and the residents of Richmond are lucky to have it. This upmarket Indian restaurant opened in Richmond in December There are four separate dining areas on different tiers of the building. The head chef is Sunil de Souza, who was sous chef at Chor Bizarre for seven years before working at Trishna for five years, followed by a stint at Kutir.
