The Celestials are perhaps the single most powerful race in the Marvel Cinematic Universe , but there have been precious few examples of them throughout the franchise's many films. The grand cosmic beings are the single oldest sentient creatures in the Marvel Universe, having been responsible for the creation of the Eternals, Deviants, and many more life forms. As a result, the importance of the Celestials' role in Marvel's cosmology , both in the films and the comics, cannot be understated. Typically appearing as humanoid giants inhabiting colorful suits of armor, the Celestials have a variety of forms and awe-inspiring galaxy-scale powers. In the comics, the spacefaring beings do much more than simply seed life in planets, acting as gatekeepers to interstellar travel that destroy or enhance entire races based on their own judgment.

In order to create more Celestials and push the boundaries of life in the Universe, they seeded planets with nascent Celestials. As the Emergence of a new Celestial required the presence of a large population of sapient beings on the world they were seeded into, the Celestials genetically engineered the Deviants to wipe out the planet's apex predators so that intelligent life could thrive. However, due to their biological nature, the Deviants evolved and betrayed their original purpose by hunting down and wiping out all life. To stop their rogue creations, the Celestials then created new synthetic beings, the Eternals , sending them across the cosmos to eradicate the Deviants and protect sapient life on the planets seeded with Celestials. There's a misconception surrounding the Celestials in Marvel Comics. They're often thought to be the beings that created the universe, but this isn't the case. Instead, these beings seized authority over various parts of the Marvel universe, acting as judges simply because they had the might to do so. Humanoid beings with powers impossible to gauge, every Celestial character fills a particular role and carries it out for millions of years. Making matters even more interesting, some beings with different histories receive the name "Celestial" in separate universes, like the MCU. While many Celestials possess similar abilities, analyzing their accomplishments can help establish their relative might.
