At the time of its inception, the CD-i was not envisioned as a game console, being designed for general multimedia purposes based around various capabilities of the compact disc format including music, home video, computing, and educational services ; the inclusion of video game support was by comparison an afterthought. Despite this, however, it primarily maintains a reputation as a video game console, in part because of the near-unanimous negative reception towards many of its most prominent titles, including ones based around Nintendo 's IPs. Nintendo originally made a deal with Philips to develop an add-on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System to allow it to play CD-based games, after a similar deal with Sony had fallen through. The project was later aborted, but in exchange for their involvement, Philips was given the license to use five of Nintendo's characters in games. Using Nintendo's licenses, Philips released three games for The Legend of Zelda series, one for the Super Mario franchise two more were planned but were canceled , and a version of Tetris. The The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario games received very bad reception, and the system generally sold poorly after

CD-i is still alive! Many many years after Philips gave up the CD-i and long after their last title was published, it is still obvious that the CD-i community is a very active and resourceful one. Not only the many CD-i related sites prove this, because a couple of weeks ago, a new CD-i game was released. Yes, indeed! This game, a tribute to the classic Frog Bog, was developed entirely from the ground up with a focus on fun, replay value, and a true love for making a great game. Interactive Dreams!
The CD-I was never meant to be a video game console, it was designed to be a "Interactive Multimedia" CD player, an expensive toy that people with money don't mind buying, using it a few times and forgetting they even bought it when something new catches their attention. When the system started to show signs of being a major flop for Philips, they pivoted the direction of the CD-I into the uncharted territories of video games. Their takes on Nintendo intellectual property were so infamously terrible that you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn't think of them when you mention the CD-i. However, there were a few cult classic games for the system. Initially marketed to consumers as "home entertainment systems", and in later years as a "gaming platform", [2] CD-i did not manage to find enough success in the market, and was mostly abandoned by Philips in Development of the "Compact Disc-Interactive" format began in two years after the launch of the Compact Disc and it was first publicly announced by Philips and Sony — two of the largest electronics companies of the time — at Microsoft 's CD-ROM Conference in Seattle in March CD-i tracks are structured according to the CD-ROM XA specification using either Mode 2 Form 1 or Mode 2 Form 2 modes , and have different classes depending on their contents "data", "video", "audio", "empty" and "message". The format quickly gained interest from large manufacturers, and received backing from many particularly Matsushita. This format puts CD-i software and data into the pregap of Track 1.
