From October 22 to November 3 this year was the Feria de la Catrina in Capula, and in our mission to collect more art than we have shelves to put it on, El Chango and I took a bus from Morelia to check it out. As usual, my way of doing things was the wrong way of doing things for Mexico. Most of the Catrinas are absurdly cheap for the amount of time they must take to make. The only thing holding you back is the thought of caring for them on the bus or plane without letting their fingers snap off we failed on that front, but we glued them back on. By the time we decided which Catrinas we wanted from the very first store we went to, naturally , the store had closed. We ended up coming back for the whole next day and leaving with five large, delicate Catrinas, which is pretty much the dumbest thing to travel with but also too perfect for our macabre home aesthetic to pass up. We also snagged a bottle of rompope and a giant pan de muertos filled with cream. Each carrying stacks of boxes like cartoon characters, El Chango remarked that I was finally a proper Mexican. When El Chango came to visit me in Canada, he casually asked me if bus drivers kill a ton of people there as well. Here, there are no bus stops or schedules and the bus drivers often swerve around the other cars without indicating or stop to do some quick shopping in a market stall or yell back and forth with street vendors at the traffic lights. This bus driver on the way back to Morelia stopped to buy gas. The bus driver waved him off. The driver waved over an attendant who started to fuel the bus while the engine was still running. The nerd was right, and not a nerd.
Step 6 : Match the diamond to the corresponding symbol on the canvas.

Alexandra de F. Two major symbols of this celebration are La Catrina Calavera also known as sugar skulls and the extravagant floral arrangments used on La Catrina or on the altars, such as marigolds. First created by Mexican illustrator Jose Guadalupe Posada between and , La Calavera Garbancera was actually a social commentary about Indigenous Mexican women opting for a European ideal of dress, with large, feathered hats, French dress, and white makeup to make the skin look lighter. Diego Rivera later painted this same type of skeleton woman as part of his mural, Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park , and called her La Catrina. Then we have the equally-iconic sugar skulls. These brightly-decorated calaveras are a part of any Dia de los Muertos ofrenda — small ones for departed children celebrated on November 1 , and large skulls for adults celebrated on November 2.

Everywhere you look on the streets during Day of the Dead celebrations across Latin America, a familiar face looks back. A face that juxtaposes the macabre and the elegant, it's in the makeup on children's faces, the elaborate dress of the women, in the celebratory ' bread of the dead ' and in every shop window selling souvenirs and emblems of this uniquely atmospheric festival. This face has a definite aesthetic: a skull, wearing a much-embroidered bonnet resplendent with flowers. And however superficially festive it may appear, La Catrina's presence throughout Mexico's Day of the Dead mythology makes a much deeper statement of mortality, destiny and the societal divisions of class. Her role was to watch over the bones of the dead, and her presence was front-and-centre during any recognition of those who had passed on. And where had those souls passed to? The belief amongst the Mesoamericans was that the dead make a journey that descends nine levels to the depths of Chicunamictlan. The ancients' view of death was not a mournful one: they saw it as a part of the cycle of life , and celebrated the departed by leaving offerings on makeshift altars, or ofrendas , that would assist them in their onward trials. These ofrendas continue to be associated with Day of the Dead, which over the centuries also absorbed pagan and Catholic celebration customs — including the dates of the festival straddling both All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day and All Soul's Day.
