Age-Group triathletes from the around the world are much more than just racers classified behind an age category. They are athletes.

One of the many great things about triathlon is its age-group structure. However old you are, triathlon gives you the opportunity to compete against other athletes of a similar vintage. This means you can race for your country whether you're 25 or 85 without being a full-time, professional athlete. And it may not be as hard to qualify as you probably think it is. British Triathlon takes teams to a range of European and World Championship events, including duathlon, aquathlon, cross triathlon, sprint and long-distance triathlon. For most of these events, Great Britain can enter up to 20 men and 20 women for each five-year age-group band. In other words, there are plenty of opportunities to don a GB tri suit.

Membership of British Triathlon has a wide range of benefits including:. For British Championship races anyone can compete, even if they have raced in elite races during the same calendar year. Athletes need to pay a registration fee to register their intent to qualify for Championship events, this enables them to be considered for the Great Britain Age-Group Team. This covers the administration for the Age Group Team, administration for qualifying races, office space, other administration costs and bank charges among other essential items and processes. This includes covering the costs of those volunteers who travel to International events. The Team Managers and support staff are volunteers who strive to support you and give up their time all year around. Athletes need to pay the race entry fee as set out on the team information emails. Athletes need to book their own flights, accommodation, transfers and all other travel arrangements. The volunteer Team Managers greatly add to the experience of competing in the Great Britain Age Group team and are key in administering the teams not just at the event but for the whole year.

Following a truncated racing calendar for the Great Britain Age-Group Team in , the team were able to race at a handful of events towards the end of the summer and into the autumn, with athletes who were unable to race because of cancelled or postponed events having the option for their places to be rolled into the teams for next year. Despite the impact on events and travel that Covid has had, the Great Britain Age-Group Team has been out in force and winning medals on their return to the start line.
