The new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse introduces plenty of different takes on the Wall-Crawler, quickly including cameos and shots of assorted Spider-Heroes from across the multiverse. There even seems to be some real tension between the heroes, as a brewing conflict between the Spider-Heroes could suggest a more dramatic direction for the film and its characters. One of the many versions of Spider-Man featured briefly in the trailer though is a far sillier conception. On top of codifying Peter's connection to Marvel's First Family, it's also become one of Spider-Man's most enduring alternate costumes in media outside of comics. After visiting the Baxter Building and having Reed Richards analyze the black costume he received on Battle-World , Parker was shocked to learn that the costume was actually a living symbiote. While The Fantastic Four agreed to house the alien and study it, Parker was worried leaving the Baxter Building as just himself would either outright expose his identity or at the very least give people a reason to investigate his origins. To help appease concerns, Human Torch -- who'd long enjoyed a playfully prankish friendship with the Wall-Crawler -- gave him a spare version of the classic Fantastic Four costume to wear. He also gave him a paper bag with eyeholes cut to serve as a mask, and -- as one final indignity -- put a Kick Me sign on his back. Spider-Man was forced to web-swing back home in this costume, stopping an active crime and being photographed as a potential new recruit to the Fantastic Four. The Bombastic Bag-Man has been referenced in-universe a few times since then, such as during the "Identity Crisis" storyline. It has even come back recently as a costume for Peter to use while retraining following a serious injury fighting the U-Foes. While the Bombastic Bag-Man costume has been referenced in the comics, it's perhaps more famous for its appearances outside Earth The costume has frequently appeared in video games about Spider-Man as a popular alternate costume. Now, it seems like the Bag-Man will be making an appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , seemingly serving as a semi-permanent identity for at least one version of the hero in the multiverse. On one level, it's a silly enough gag costume that it makes sense fans have held onto it.

On his way home from the Fantastic Four's headquarters, Spider-man's spider-sense buzzed, and he took a detour to help the police with a foiled liquor store robbery. Attacking the criminals, he cracked the joke, "I'm just your friendly neighborhood travel agent! And I'm here to present you with a free ticket to loose tooth city! Later on TV, they referred to him as "the unknown super hero". During Spider-man's Identity Crisis story arc, Peter is out of reach of his costume and is forced to fight crime wearing a paper bag on his head, again referring to himself as ' The Bombastic Bag-man '. The suit itself was made of Unstable Molecules , insulated the wearer from electrical assaults and performed all other functions any of the Fantastic Four's own suits would. The second incarnation of the Bag-Man, worn briefly during the Identity Crisis story arc, is limited to a pair of red pants, black knee high boots, no shirt and a paper bag worn overhead.
