New Doppler radar sensitive enough to track locusts and rain bursts fills big gaps in western NSW. A new Doppler weather radar capable of detecting a locust swarm, a flock of birds or a remote rain shower has been unveiled in the central west of NSW, promising more accurate data for farmers and pilots. The new tower in Yeoval, near Wellington, is the last of three installed after the commissioning of Doppler radars in Brewarrina and Hillston. Before the completion of this new network a third of the state and swathes of productive cropping land was in a radar blind spot. Mr Saunders said it was also critical for pilots and patient movements in regional healthcare, which often rely on flights in remote areas. Mr Saunders said that was despite the fact it would usually be a federal government responsibility. The latest technology allows these new stations to pick up weather activity, dust storms, locust swarms, flocks of birds and even bushfire smoke. Mr Hansen said the new technology would allow the DPI to accurately map what areas of the state were entering or leaving drought conditions to give farmers early warnings "about the drying out of the landscape". Farmer Wayne Dunford, who has land at Parkes and near Brewarrina in the previous "blind spot", said the new radar had already made a difference. Mr Dunford, who helped lobby the government to fund the stations on behalf of NSW Farmers, said it was critical, especially in an exceptionally wet season like the state is in now. He said the main benefit was knowing exactly how much rain had fallen and where, which was previously hindered by limited advanced rain gauges in western areas of the state. Future radar is a new drop-down option available on the Weatherzone radar, allowing you to see where precipitation may fall in the next 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hour timeframe. It is a prediction that uses past radar and satellite data to infer the movement and intensity of precipitation. This differs from observed radar which uses physical instrumentation to measure and render precipitation as it happens.
