Blackfish is a American documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. It concerns Tilikum , an orca held by SeaWorld and the controversy over captive orcas. The documentary concerns the captivity of Tilikum, an orca involved in the deaths of three people, and the consequences of keeping orcas in captivity. Cowperthwaite argues these incidents contributed to the orca's aggression. The film includes a testimonial from Lori Marino, director of science with the Nonhuman Rights Project. Cowperthwaite also focuses on SeaWorld's claims that lifespans of orcas in captivity are comparable to those in the wild, [6] typically 30 years for males and 50 years for females, [7] a claim the film argues is false. The documentary argues that the wild-caught orcas experienced extreme stress when captured as juveniles, and spending a lifetime in aquaria being forced to perform and breed lead to aggression toward other orcas and humans. The film features footage of Tilikum's attacks on trainers and other captive orcas as well as interviews with witnesses.
Marky mark and the funky bunch good vibration
These 3 deaths, which included 2 Orca trainers, were caused by Sea World's infamous bull Orca "Tilikum. It oozes with passion for the creatures which helps enforce its argument against their treatment, not just for better protection for trainers, but for corporations like SeaWorld to not turn a blind eye at the clear injustice they've cased. Self - Director, Center for Whale Research. It's a documentary that might put the "Cove" to shame. I went to the Benton County Fair near where I live last summer and saw some touring wild animals, that were locked up in extremely small cages, directly across from a very loud live rock band. Not only does Gabriela point out that these animals are highly emotional and social, but she also reminds us that these animals have never attacked anyone in the wild, they live much longer lives in the wild than in captivity, and that it isn't normal that their fins drag to their sides like most of the whales in SeaWorld. This is a film about the horrors that these animals go through being kept in captivity for our pleasure and the latest film to showcase how horrible Sea World can be for the very animals it claims to protect, oh the irony. Self - Dawn Brancheau's Sister. Fortunately, the filmmakers find a different way to present the footage each time and it keeps it from feeling repetitive and builds to feeling more heart breaking at every turn. Edit page. Frankly, nothing in this will want to make you go back to Sea World again. Sign in to vote.
They aim to document abuse and inspire reform. Where 's "The Cove" exposed the theme park chain's role in dolphin kidnapping, abuse and slaughter, "Blackfish" does the same with orcas.

Cowperthwaite's reconstructs the narrative leading to the final, and fatal, encounter of Tilikum and Dawn Brancheau, alternating footage, both in the wild and in aquariums, with interviews and contextual data. The documentary is very aggressive and it is effective in sending out the message and provoking a reaction in the audience. Self - Judge archive sound. What comes out of all of this loud and clear is that when it comes to SeaWorld, money is prioritised over the welfare of the animals and the safety of the trainers. Interviewed are former Sea World trainers who do not hesitate to talk about the misinformation they were told to tell audiences about orcas' lifespan and fins which routinely collapse in captivity and the great benefit whales experience at SeaWorld. There aren't many winners in this one. Runtime 1 hour 23 minutes. As somebody with an interest in wildlife and conservation, I found this to be enthralling stuff that not only educated me about a species but also horrified me in the extreme.
