Matthew Modine plays the introverted "Birdy. In fact, it's downright depressing many times. It also had an unusual ending, one the critics seemed to all pan but I liked. I thought it was neat. The movie does keep your interest, so it gets decent points for that, and it certainly presents a unique character study. I was flipping through the channels one quiet evening at home when I stumbled across this picture, "Birdy. Well, he spends most of his time with birds, has dreams of flying away from his real-world troubles, and his only friend is a neighborhood tough named Al Nicolas Cage. So because of his obsession with birds, Birdy has to be crazy, right?

The strangest thing about "Birdy," which is a very strange and beautiful movie indeed, is that it seems to work best at its looniest level, and is least at ease with the things it takes most seriously. You will not discover anything new about war in this movie, but you will find out a whole lot about how it feels to be in love with a canary. The movie is about two friends from South Philadelphia. One of them, Al, played by Nicolas Cage , is a slick romeo with a lot of self-confidence and a way with the women. The other, nicknamed Birdy Matthew Modine , is goofy, withdrawn, and absolutely fascinated with birds. As kids, they are inseparable friends.

The film is brought to its climatic height in the scene that shows what sent Birdy over the edge. Plugin not supported. From the start the two are pretty dissimilar - Al is athletic, outgoing and popular while Birdy is quiet and introverted - a typical nerd. Marshall Bell Ronsky. Rotten Tomatoes. Authority control databases. But all those little flaws don't make Birdy anything less than a classic. Arguably Alan Parker's best film, "Birdy" stars Mathew Modine and Nicholas Cage as a pair of friends who are shipped off to Vietnam and then come home disfigured and traumatised. His character, while strange, is certainly believable and definitely likeable. Birdy doesn't care about the outside world, and his ideas of what is truly important and what freedom is couldn't be further from the society that tells him to be concerned with superficial things. Watch Birdy. The film is mostly worth watching for Modine and Cage, both of whom turn in a couple of excellent performances. Al suspects Birdy of feigning insanity to hide from the world, and he expresses to Birdy that he too wishes to hide due to his own injuries. Birdy builds a new aviary in his bedroom and purchases two canaries.

Show all. So why should a quirky ending suddenly be considered a cheap gag? Crazy credits Animals: Perta Opposites attract, and the two are fast friends - almost lovers, although Cage prefers bleacher quickies, and Modine could only make it with a canary curiously, he names one "Al". The film deals with some difficult and very dark questions, but it manages to keep the audience interested and even entertained without compromising its message.
