March Book of the Month. The Extinction of Irena Rey is genuinely insane, but in the best way possible. When Irena disappears, so begins a high brow, albeit funny and mischievous tale, that explores the intricacies of language and expression. Without giving too much away, think: locked-room murder mystery with suspects only identified by the language they speak Serbian, Sweden, English, French, German, Slovenian, Spanish and Ukrainian. The translators are totally bizarre and flit about the forest sharing meals, putting on costumes, foraging for mushrooms and generally being strange and it makes for a fever-dream-esque, cult-like atmosphere. This is a sci-fi short story collection distinct from anything I, and probably you, have ever read before.

Red is the emblematic color of communism and has thus become a synonym for "communist" plural reds. Thus "better dead than red" means that 'one would rather die or be dead than to become or be a communist', and vice versa. The slogans became widespread during the Cold War , first gaining currency in the United States during the late s, amid debates about anti-communism and nuclear disarmament. The first phrase, "better red than dead", is often credited to British philosopher Bertrand Russell , but in his Has Man a Future? The first known English-language use of either term came in , long before their widespread popularity. In an editorial criticizing John Edgerton , a Tennessee businessman who had mandated morning prayers in his factories to help keep out "dangerous ideas", The Nation sarcastically wrote:. It is high time in any case that the workers learned to live by faith, not work. As for those weaklings who may fall by the wayside and starve to death, let the country bury them under the epitaph: Better Dead than Red. The first known use of "better red than dead" came in August , when the Oakland Tribune wrote: "The popular phrase 'better red than dead' has lost what appeal it ever had.

I'm curious on how police interaction will work in the future with the small town and all the notice she must be gathering. This is the 3rd time I've read this series and I love it so much. It was hard to believe it was only pages. We don't need that "liar, liar, pants on fire" when she tells a lie. What an effing waste of my time! Book two in the Psychic Eye Mystery Series. It's one thing to get inspiration from real life friends and family, it's another to make them actual characters in every way, shape and form. Jessica Adams. Well because where would the plot be without the mafia scare. I don't know why he puts up with her. Also, the author is immature in her character formation.
