While the armored villain known as the Beetle may not instantly bring forth images of evil and terror, there is no mistaking the fact that the Beetle has become a superpowered thorn in the side of Spider-Man over the years. However, since the original man behind the mask of the Beetle has moved on to other identities, six other characters have worn the various armors of the Beetle, so fans might need a bit of a crash course on the high-flying armored villain who would go on to become a heroic member of the Thunderbolts. While the Beetle would quickly settle on Spider-Man as his most reoccurring foe, the Beetle would find himself facing off against a number of other Marvel heroes over the years, and he was even hunted by Iron Man during the "Armor Wars" storyline. Most Spider-Man villains are content with becoming a part of the infamous group of super-criminals known as the Sinister Six , but instead of joining up the Beetle decided to start his own group, naming them the Sinister Syndicate. The Syndicate's original line-up was led by Beetle and included Hydro-Man, Rhino , Speed Demon, and Boomerang and they sold their services out to the highest bidder, though the team was often brought down by squabbles amongst its own members. There have been quite a few different armors used by the Beetle character over the years, as Abe Jenkins continued to modify and upgrade his original armored design, resulting in two main armors during his time as the villain. The first armor featured long suction fingers and heavy wings while his second armor was a bit more streamlined, maneuverable, and menacing.

The original Beetle armor was just armored cloth and heavy metallic wings which could be used to glide silently. It had a strange weapon system : gloves with super-long, tentacle-like fingers, each ending with a powerful suction cup. These gloves were impossibly strong, able to rend steel and rip flesh by just affixing themselves on the surface and then tearing. Jenkins and the Tinkerer joined forces to design and build the second generation Beetle armor. It was an interesting but relatively low-powered combat suit.
