I always envisioned Optimus as a fair leader, righteous and empathic. A diplomat, but not afraid to push the boundaries. Bayverse Optimus, on the other wand, seems more like a borderline psycho who has no regrets about brutally killing any enemies on his way and not sparing anyone. I know most of the people Optimus slayed were folks like the Deceptions, but I never imagined him being so cold about it. I didn't like that one. But that isn't the character I grew up with.

Optimus Prime is the leader of the Autobots. Long ago, he was the humble leader of Cybertron 's science division, which studied the AllSpark , and were protected by Lord High Protector Megatron 's military. When Megatron was corrupted by The Fallen , Optimus discovered that he was the last of the Dynasty of Primes , hidden away when The Fallen destroyed their lineage. In response to Megatron's attempts to seize the AllSpark and conquer other worlds, Optimus assumed his proper title and rallied the Autobots to stand against the Decepticons. As obsessively as Megatron strives to achieve his objective, Optimus is equally as dedicated to stopping him, even at the cost of his life, his world, and—if necessary—his own people. It was on his order that the AllSpark was jettisoned into space, dooming Cybertron to a slow death and his people to a nomadic life. The sacrifices he has made weigh heavily on his spark , but they must be done, for there is no other choice. He knows the ambitions that lurk in Megatron's spark, and they must never see the light of day. Lives must be kept free from the threat of Megatron's tyranny, no matter the cost. This obsession with the defeat of Megatron has robbed Optimus of some of his early idealism.

On the roof of an abandoned factory, Optimus engages Lockdown, even though he is vastly under-powered. Bumblebee takes place before the other films supposedlybut was released later.

Like most versions of the character, he is charismatic and valiant, caring deeply for his fellow Autobots and for the well-being of all forms of life, yet also proving to be a powerful force against his enemies. This endeavour was successful and Sentinel, Optimus and fellow recruit Megatron were all heralded as heroes for giving Cybertronians cause to unite. But Sentinel Prime had grown old and weary and refused to lead the Cybertronians, and, in confidence, he revealed to Optimus that he was a Prime, and that he ought to succeed him as leader. But Optimus could not believe he was a Prime.

Optimus Prime and Ratchet to Sam Witwicky. The Autobots are one of two factions in the Cybertronian War. They fight to protect humans from the evil The Decepticons. Sometime later, the AllSpark first created seven Primes. The seven leaders set out into the universe seeking distant suns to harvest and create Energon by building powerful machines called Star Harvesters on the planets that were the closest to them. The Primes set out with a rule: Never destroy a planet with life. It means to never harvest a sun with an inhabited planet. Until one of them tried to defy that rule and his name forevermore was the Fallen due to him despising the human race and desire to exterminate humanity by starting off with ordering the construction of a Star Harvester on Earth in order to destroy both the planet and its sun. The only way to activate the machine is with a legendary key called the Matrix of Leadership, which he stole from the Primes after tricking them to come to Earth in order to do so.

For two generations, Optimus and Megatron ruled Cybertron together. The two personalities created a balance; Prime was fair while Megatron was firm.

The revived Prime challenged Megatron to a duel, Twilight's Last Gleaming, Part: 4 but as they fought, Optimus learned that Megatron's link to the AllSpark allowed his old enemy to instantly heal any damage Prime managed to inflict. The human refused to let Optimus die, and then they were rescued by Optimus Primal, the Maximal Leader throwing him towards a road for him to drive both himself and Noah to safety, the latter giving him a boost while in vehicle mode. Both spaceships were sucked into a wormhole and ended up in an alternate dimension. The Fallen - a former Prime and the original Decepticon according to Transformer legend - had awoken from an ages long period of isolation and was now coordinating Decepticon activity on Earth. Though his daughter and his friend disagree with him, Cade begins to try and repair Optimus as best he can. Prime dispatched Bumblebee to the surface to investigate the ship while he and the other Autobots battled Decepticons from the Nemesis ; Prime personally took on and defeated Blackout , Scorponok , and Frenzy. She revealed to him that the Earth had formed around the body of Unicron and that she wanted Optimus to retrieve her staff from the Knights of Iacon on Earth.
