Harry Faversham finds himself branded a coward by his friends and family when he resigns his commission before the war campaign against the Sudan uprising.
British-Egyptian reconquest — The battle took place on 2 September , at Kerreri , 11 kilometres 6. Following the establishment of the Mahdist State in Sudan, and the subsequent threat to the regional status quo and to British-occupied Egypt, the British government decided to send an expeditionary force with the task of overthrowing the Khalifa. The commander of the force, Sir Herbert Kitchener, was also seeking revenge for the death of General Gordon , who had been killed when a Mahdist army captured Khartoum thirteen years earlier. Among those present was year-old soldier and reporter Winston Churchill as well as a young Captain Douglas Haig.

Sign In. The Four Feathers Hide Spoilers. TheLittleSongbird 12 January One of my all-time favourite films of the 30s, perhaps even ever. For me, this is my personal favourite of all the Korda brothers films, and it is a true gem of a film that shouldn't be missed. There is very little to fault The Four Feathers. It has truly evocative location work, sweeping cinematography and rich bold colours that still look amazing. The script is tight, the story is epic and always compelling and the film is perfectly paced with some great action. Miklos Rosza's score is just outstanding, easily up there as one of his best, while Zoltan Korda directs beautifully, and the acting of John Clements, Ralph Richardson and C. It was here, in the Mahdist-stronghold of Omdurman, that Churchill took part in one of the last major cavalry charges in the history of the British army, when the 21 st Lancers attacked a small group of enemy soldiers. As Churchill recounts, the situation soon changed:. A score of horsemen and a dozen bright flags rose as if by magic from the earth. Despite their number, the spear-wielding Mahdist fighters were no match for the advanced weaponry of the British but Churchill was lucky to survive the ill-judged charge of the 21 st Lancers which saw heavy British casualties.

The battle also illustrated the technological advantage of European military establishments over their brave but primitively armed opponents in the wars of imperialism that preceded World War I. Although the khedive was still nominal ruler, the real power in the country rested with the British consul-general and high commissioner, and British imperialists soon considered the Nile Valley part of the British Empire. From Egypt, the British were soon drawn into difficulties in the vast, poor, and hostile Sudan. Egypt had long sought to establish its control over the Upper Nile region but aroused strong opposition through actions against the slave trade and heavy taxes. Soon he had thousands of warrior followers, known as Dervishes. The Egyptian government decided to intervene to put down the uprising. The Egyptians then sought assistance from the British government. To accomplish this, he sent out Major General Charles Gordon. He had once been governor of the Sudan for the Egyptians and had taken an aggressive stance against the slave trade there.

The Triumph of the Sun by Wilbur Smith concentrates mainly on the siege of Khartoum and the fate of the defeated, but carries the story through to Kitchener's campaign. Aubrey Smith is excellent. And now, this British film. In Sudan itself, the Khalifa had poets among his entourage, not all of whom were killed in the fighting, but much of their work was either destroyed by the British during systematic searches after the battle, or even by the poets themselves in fear of reprisal.

In Omdurman there was the domed tomb of the Mahdi, as a symbol of his proclaimed jihad against all unbelievers and their collaborators.
