The Inspired by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, a handful of devotees began conducting weekly assemblies in the late 's and early 's. With the guidance and blessings of His Holiness, the congregation grew from just a handful of families to a strong group of dedicated devotees who yearned for spiritual growth. By maintaining faith and patience, the congregation completed with Haveli building more commonly known as the Visitors Center in During His visit that year, Pramukh Swami Maharaj consecrated the sacred images to be placed in the Mandir before the Mandir was even completed. Indeed, this consecration ceremony was the first of its kind in the history of BAPS. Constructing a traditional Hindu Mandir in the 21st century requires the perfect combination of state-of-the-art engineering methodology and ancient carving techniques. From cutting-edge earthquake protection technology to hand-carved marble archways, this Mandir represents a unique fusion of traditional Indian architecture and modern construction. A special team of architects and engineers surveyed the Chino Hills area before selecting the type of stone to be utilized in constructing the Mandir. Recognizing the lush green hills and the mountainous peaks, the team chose pink sandstone from Rajasthan, India, for the exterior of the Mandir. The interior of the Mandir is comprised of white Italian marble from the quarries of Carrera, Italy. To ensure continuity inside the Mandir, each piece of marble was hand-selected, closely analyzed and chosen for extraction. From Italy, each block of marble was shipped to India where it was unloaded at a port, driven to specialized artisan centers and prepared for carving. Thereafter, skilled artisans and craftsmen intricately hand-carved marble slabs and pieces of stone for placement in the Mandir. Once complete, each stone was identified with a series of numbers and letters, packed into tailored containers, and shipped to the United States. The Indian pink sandstone underwent a similar process.

Many devotees view the mandir as a place for transmission of Hindu values and their incorporation into daily routines, family life, and careers. BAPS also engages in a host of humanitarian and charitable endeavors through BAPS Charities , a separate non-profit aid organisation which has spearheaded a number of projects around the world addressing healthcare, education, environmental causes, and community-building campaigns. The basis for the formation of BAPS was Shastriji Maharaj's conviction that Swaminarayan remained present on earth through a lineage of Gunatit Gurus perfect devotee , starting with Gunatitanand Swami , one of Swaminarayan's most prominent disciples, [4] [12] [13] [14] [5] [15] [note 1] and that Swaminarayan and his choicest devotee, Gunatitanand Swami, were ontologically, Purushottam and Akshar, respectively. Shastriji Maharaj sought to publicly reveal his ideas, [21] and to worship Gunatitanand as the abode of Purushottam, c. Paralleling Sahajand Swami's building of temples to propagate his teachings, [29] [note 5] Shastriji Maharaj then set out to build his own mandir to "house the devotional representations of Bhagwan and Guru" and propagate his understanding of Swaminarayan's teachings. The Gujarati word Bochasanwasi implies hailing from Bochasan, since the organisation's first mandir was built in this village. Shastriji Maharaj spent the majority of —15 discoursing throughout Gujarat, while continuing construction work of mandirs in Bochasan and Sarangpur, gaining a group of devotees, admirers, and supporters.

Built entirely using traditional methods and materials, the Swaminarayan mandir has been described as being Britain's first authentic Hindu temple. The temple complex also consists of a permanent exhibition entitled "Understanding Hinduism" and a cultural centre housing an assembly hall, gymnasium, bookshop, and offices. In August , to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the mandir's opening, King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla said that, "the first of its kind outside India, Neasden Temple serves the local community as a place of worship, learning, celebration, peace and community service. The mandir rises to a height of 21 meters 70 feet and is 60 meters feet long. The haveli , built in a traditional haveli style, has a courtyard architectural style that was originally developed in 17 th century western India, and serves as a cultural center for the mandir. Whereas the mandir is carved from stone, the haveli is constructed from wood. English oak and Burmese teak have been fashioned into panels, arches and screens, all carved by craftsmen in India with a cornucopia of geometric patterns, stylised animal heads, and flower garlands. The Burmese teak used was harvested from sustainable forests. To compensate for the English oak trees used, over 2, English oak saplings were planted in Devon. The haveli also incorporates energy-saving features such as light-wells.
