Because, particularly if you're a melee character, you'll be spending most of your time underneath Astel's abdomen, it has a number of punishing attacks if you get too greedy. Much better than rolling away at aoe attacks. At around half health, it will use a Teleport to get away. The thing that does me in with him isn't that he has the grab attack, it's that by the time I've adjusted the camera, it's normally too late.
