Arkansas Digital Ark-ives The online digital archive of the Arkansas State Archives includes digitized documents, visuals, maps, broadsides, pamphlets, and three-dimensional objects significant to Arkansas history and culture, from the holdings of the Arkansas State Archives. Arkansas State Archives The Arkansas State Archives organizes and maintaines the history of Arkansas by collecting and preserving state, county, and federal records, manuscript materials, newspapers, military records, family histories, an extensive Arkansas history and genealogy library, and a collection of Arkansas art and artifacts. Butler Center for Arkansas Studies The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies was created for the purpose of promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of Arkansas history, literature, art, and culture. The research collections have more than 10 million documents and photographs on Arkansas history available for public use.

The Arkansas History Commission, as the institution was originally named, was established by the Arkansas General Assembly in as part of the burgeoning state archives movement that swept the South shortly after Over the next several decades, Herndon crowded into his small offices a remarkable collection of museum objects, historical manuscripts, public documents, books, and pamphlets. Many of its irreplaceable manuscript collections and other items were placed in the dark, dank basement of the capitol. Here, they were not only inaccessible to the public but were in real danger of being damaged or destroyed by damp, dangerous storage conditions. The commission was able to obtain the promise of new, larger quarters in this building if restoration plans went through. In April of , Herndon supervised the move of the fruits of his forty years of archival labor into the west wing of refurbished building. In , Herndon was succeeded as director by Ted R. Perhaps the most important were the addition of a three-story archival storage annex to the north side of the Old State House and the establishment of an agency microfilming program. His new storage space allowed him to set aside an area for the use of a modest but growing number of historical and genealogical researchers. All content digitized as part of this program is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities through a partnership with the Library of Congress. Below is a map of Arkansas and its counties. The green-shaded counties are those with newspapers that have been digitized as part of the first two completed cycles of the NDNP project. In , ASA was awarded a two-year grant to select, duplicate, and digitize historic Arkansas newspapers with a goal of producing , pages of content for the Chronicling America website. By the end of the first cycle, ASA had digitized , pages from 40 newspaper titles representing 15 counties in the state. In , ASA was once again awarded a second two-year grant which added an additional 20 newspaper titles representing 13 Arkansas counties for a total of , pages added to the Chronicling America website. In , ASA was awarded a third grant to fund an additional , pages of content. The emphasis on newspaper title selection for this cycle is focused on underrepresented communities including female-owned and operated papers, minority-owned papers, and foreign language papers. In August, ASA was awarded funding for an additional cycle of the grant.
