Arianne is the first introduced person of color to serve as a point of view character in the book series [1] and has been positively received as a strong and complex female character. As a result of her storyline in A Feast for Crows , which deals with Arianne's struggle to subvert the patriarchal system of Westeros, she has sometimes been described as a "feminist icon". Arianne is dissatisfied with her father Doran Martell , believing him to be weak due to his inaction over the deaths of his sister Elia and brother Oberyn at the hands of House Lannister. She fears being replaced as his heir by her younger brother Quentyn Martell due to never having been trained for rule and due to a letter suggesting that Doran intends to name Quentyn heir. Doran has also imprisoned her cousins, the Sand Snakes , seemingly to placate the Iron Throne.

Under Dornish law, Arianne is also the heir to Doran's title. Arianne is described to be young in her early twenties when she appears in the books and to be physically gorgeous in a number of ways. She has olive skin typical of her house, big dark eyes and long, thick black hair that falls in ringlets to the middle of her back. Arianne is extremely feisty and flirtatious on the outside, easily seducing Arys Oakheart and initiating a dominantly physical relationship with him. Even in her relationship, Arianne proves herself to be far more complicated than one would think: she is surprisingly intelligent and very manipulative, as evidenced by how she manages to control him using her words and her body. However, there are deeper meanings and complexities to her attitude: she is envious and angry at what she believes to be her father's distrust and disgust of her, and is motivated by the news that her younger brothers Quentyn and Trystane will succeed her, even though Dornish law cites Arianne as the rightful heir to Princedom of Dorne. She is very protective over those she loves, but dangerous to those whom she views as enemies. When confronted with her actions, Arianne is fierce and angry, but once she learns her father's true purposes she begins to understand his treatment of her and becomes an invaluable asset alongside him in bringing the Targaryen dynasty back to Westeros and avenging the slaughter of her family by Tywin Lannister and his kind.
