It excels at battling other cavalry, but is rather ineffective otherwise. Every civilization that has access to Camel Riders except for the Cumans can upgrade them to Heavy Camel Riders, but the upgrade to the Imperial Camel Rider is unique to the Hindustanis. Heavy Camel Riders are a great counter to enemy cavalry. They perform better in combat than Halberdier as they deal similar amounts of damage but are much more durable. Additionally, unlike Halberdiers, they can force engagements against enemy cavalry. They also fare well against enemy mounted archers due to their bonus damage, something the Halberdier line is unable to do. Camel units are the second fastest land unit type in Age of Empires II , only superseded by light cavalry. Since they have very low armor and base attack, they are not effective against anything else than mounted units, so it is wise not to send them against foot archers or infantry. Camel Riders are also ineffective against buildings and take extra damage from defensive structures especially before The African Kingdoms. They also have a decently expensive cost of 55 food , 60 gold , especially when compared to the cheap Halberdier. The latter in particular makes this upgrade paramount against enemy cavalry, and the inexpensive cost makes it worth picking up before other upgrades. And very few games have been played for such a long time as Age of Empires II, arguably the most beloved installment in the series. With the HD version came several new civilizations to control and develop into bustling empires, complicating the ever-controversial question of which civilization is the best. Some may do better on certain maps, some benefit from 1v1 settings or are good in team games, and the list of variables goes on making it hard to make a simple ranking. The first entry in our list happens to be the Britons, a classic civilization with a focus on archery for their military strategies. Their archery ranges produce units considerably faster than the average civilization, and their archers in general have a longer range. Their unique unit is the Longbowman which can out-range virtually every other unit in the game as well as towers and castles once fully upgraded. Their villagers gather food faster from sheep, and their Town Centers are cheaper than usual, which helps their economy and gives them the possibility of expanding in the mid-game much faster. Their Camel Archer unit is among the best ranged mounted units as well, with excellent strength and accuracy, and it benefits from the Maghrabi Camels tech which grants Berber camel units a regenerative ability.
