Over the course of half a century fans have been intrigued by Wayne's butler Alfred Pennyworth. While the original Alfred's backstory was that he and his family had a long history with the Cobblepots, that story was negated for a fresh and mysterious take in Gotham. Pennyworth and Gotham are not set in the same timeline but that doesn't mean there isn't a connection. Pennyworth has the same showrunners as Gotham , so even though the shows are meant to be each a standalone series, Pennyworth still might give answers to Gotham's long-standing questions.
