Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Forming a sorority broke barriers for African American women in areas where they had little power or authority due to a lack of opportunities for minorities and women in the early 20th century. The sorority is one of the nation's largest Greek-letter organizations, having had more than , members in 1, chapters in the United States and several other countries. Howard faculty member Ethel T. Robinson encouraged Hedgemon by relating her own observances of sorority life at the Women's College at Brown University. Robinson and other female students had not been able to participate in the existing sororities because of their race.

When MIT was founded in , most students lived locally and commuted from home. Together with eight other coeds at the mecca for Negro education, Hedgeman crafted a design that not only fostered interaction, stimulation, and ethical growth among members; but also provided hope for the masses. Ransom ' Hope felt that an effective group was needed through which Black women on predominantly White campuses could communicate and help each other. Through the years, Lambda Upsilon has been committed to sisterhood and service to all mankind. It has participated in community service in the Greater Boston and Cambridge community and has implemented programs on each of the national platforms. Lambda Upsilon carries a rich tradition of excellence and vows to continue blazing a trailer for others to follow. When I recall my experiences at MIT it is synonymous with Lambda Upsilon, perhaps because it was part of my college life for the entire four years. I am not sure if I realized that when I became soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha it was a lifetime gift enabling me to always find connections with women like me and securing us a small space in the MIT history book. My most treasured memory is the day we finally 'went over'. We put so much effort into that day, from making sure we had coordinated outfits that would look appropriate on all of us to putting on a show for our MIT black community. We must have changed clothes 4 or 5 times that day. We left quite a legacy for other women to follow. It was the promise of sisterhood that first piqued my interest in AKA.

This administration has six initiatives. These initiatives are designed to improve the lives of those we serve. We will work collaboratively to maximize our outreach on progressive endeavors and consistently produce leaders who will advance our credo of service. For more than a century, our sisterhood has served as the foundation for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to be an indomitable force for good—in our communities, states, nation, and the world. We will intentionally take time to fellowship and form lifelong relationships based on affinity, love, trust, respect, and shared goals and interests, while concurrently building on our foundation to serve others. AKA Soror Squads are focused on building greater bonds of sisterhood around common endeavors or activities through intimate small groups.

In the early s, Howard University co-ed Ethel Hedgemon dreamed of creating a support network for women with like minds who would come together for mutual uplift and coalescence of their talents and strengths for the benefit of others.
