When initiating combat on the strategic map, the armies engage in tactical combat with each other. The environment, or tactical map, that the combat will take place in depends on the hex the combat was initiated on. Terrain, clime and hex contents, like a location, all influence the tactical map that will be used. Each type of map has its own layout of obstacles which makes the direction from which the armies enter combat particularly important. During combat, the Event Notifier can be used to show which units still have actions to use. Every unit has a limited amount of action points which they can spend on actions each turn. Apart from the first turn, one tactical operation can be fired each turn. The defending army always has the starting turn. Tactical combat is won by defeating all the opposing units. A draw will be declared after 30 turns, or if no damage is dealt for 6 turns. If a player feels like they can no longer win the battle, they can choose to surrender, or the attacking player can try to flee. On your turn, when selecting a unit during tactical combat, you can see how far it can move by the gradient color overlay.

The big question behind any good strategy game is if you can team-up with a buddy and conquer the unrelenting enemy in a ruthless campaign for dominance, and Age of Wonders: Planetfall is no different. Like any good strategy game, these types of drawn-out campaigns are great to play with a friend. The short answer is yes; players can engage in multiplayer games in Age of Wonders: Planetfall. Paradox Interactive made it easy for multiple people to play the game at the same time by enabling a hot-seat mode. In hot-seat mode, players take turns on a single device taking their turn. The one downside to this is that players are all aware of what the others have. However, if you and your friend both own the game, the two of you can engage each other in the multiplayer mode. Each side must learn knowledge about the other by exploring or engaging in diplomacy. The two parties can choose to remain transparent or share their resource and goals to have them achieve victory.

Age of Wonders is a long-running strategy franchise, but new entries only release every other blue moon. Age of Wonders III released in Before that, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic dropped in Fortunately, these long gestations give Triumph Studios plenty of time to refine the strategy and pack a lot of tiny features into its robust combat system, and that is evident in Planetfall. Previously, the Age of Wonders series dropped players into epic wars set within fantasy worlds full of elven courts and warring dragons. Planetfall warps you into the future; you awaken from cryogenic sleep to build a new empire on a variety of alien landscapes. The setting might be different, but the future remains full of colorful characters. I was impressed by the creativity expressed in every alien faction.
