I recently brought the mid-range liter model to southern Patagonia for testing, where it impressed me with its highly adjustable and feature-rich build. Below are my thoughts on the Aether Plus To see how it stacks up to the competition, check out our article on the best backpacking packs. Combined with the sturdy frame, the Aether Plus did an excellent job of distributing a full load including heavy camera equipment on technical terrain in Patagonia, including off-camber trails, boulder fields, scree slopes, and river crossings with fallen logs and slippery rocks.

Just incase you missed the news, Nims has recently finished his ground breaking challenge and, by climbing the 14 metre peaks in only 7 months, has completely smashed the previous 7 year record. I was also intrigued to see that Nims had used an Osprey Aether 70 Pro pack for his ascents. A 70 litre pack seemed quite big, but I knew Nims often ended up carrying quite a lot of his own equipment. I also knew of the Aether to be a very lightweight pack and so wondered how well it might stand up to the rigours of expedition life. All in all, I thought this was a pack I needed to find out more about and Osprey kindly sent me one to test. Here is my review….. Where to start? The Aether is jam packed with features. The Aether is actually made from 4 types of fabric. That already sounds complicated, but as is usual with Osprey, everything is done with good reason. In reality, this means the fabric in denier equates to a denier standard material in abrasion resistance.

One thing I particularly love about pack is that it is large enough for me to stuff my bear canister Backpackers Cache into the pack.

The Aether 70 has been discontinued. It was replaced by the Osprey Aether Pro I received this pack as a gift for Christmas, and now that the weather has been warmer I have been able to put it to good use. After I received the pack I returned to the store it was purchased from EMS to make sure that it was the correct size for me. Luckily the size matched my torso length and the hip belt was also the perfect size there is the ability to switch out the hip belt, and shoulder harness to create a customized fit. In addition to having the pack sized correctly to my frame, the staff at EMS also warmed the hip belt so it would form to my body for a more comfortable fit. Once I was finished with all the sizing completed, I returned home to fill the pack up with all of my gear.

The Osprey Atmos AG 70 is probably too much for most hikers, but for those serious thru-hikers, it is pretty darn good. There is mesh welded into it for airing out socks, gloves, etc. Very durable and worthy of the Osprey name! I have used it for a multi-day section hike on the AT in Georgia and also on several shorter hikes in North Carolina and North Florida. I'm not sure why, but my other pack is an 80L and this Aether 70 Medium seems to be better at fitting the gear due to the Aether's slightly wider shape than my other more narrow pack. Pros Versatility Comfort Quality construction. The hip belt is also very easily tuneable by using the twin strap adjustments to get a centralised fit. Basically, you the hip belt and shoulder straps are removable, and the store which sells the Osprey packs, should have a bunch of different sized hip belts and shoulder straps ready to use. Cool little things like a built in whistle on the chest buckle and a detachable top pocket that combines with the hipbelt to make a daypack show that extra thought and care go into these packs. I appreciate the curve of the shoulder straps. Osprey Aether 70 Built for Backpackers. I hike mostly in the Colorado mountains and the rain here can sometimes be missing for long stretches but when it does come, it comes in buckets. Having the lid that converts to a 'bum bag' is very handy. From my experience it is too heavy. There are aspects about this bag that are fantastic, the weight, price, features are all top notch. I've used this pack for weekend trips and week long trips. No part of this site may be reproduced without our written permission. With water, I had a bit over 50 pounds on that first trip and it handled it with ease. Features : External bladder access is a dream, as is the hipbelt. The hip belt and shoulder strap system is the best I have ever used!
