Finally, after three years of perseverance. If you enjoy a grim, excessively long soap opera with lots of deaths and constant unresolved tension, pick up the series--otherwise, maybe check out the show. The one drawback to this approach for me came at the end.

The story unfolds through a rotating set of subjective points of view , the success or survival of any one of which is never assured. What I like the most about this series is the characters. Fantasy writing is clearly alive and well. Heroes in gleaming mail could suffer from corns without it being a joke. The characters, for the most part, are well-developed and I personally feel that it is easy for the reader to relate to almost all of them, in one way or another. Plus, I totally cheated and looked up what happens in the sequels, and the plot only gets more convoluted and depressing. The prose was sub-par,and there were too many characters to remember, let alone care about. It was the first book that got me reading, really reading. In my case, however, the reverse held true. That's a huge plot hole that doesn't make sense. The direwolves - large ferocious animals as constant companions and protectors: always a winner with me; the intriguing climate, where summer and winter lasts years, decades even, before changing how does that work? When I picked this set up, I thought the series was four books, so I was really surprised to learn that there are seven books total. I see enough of that in the real world, I don't want to encounter the same depressing state of affairs in my fantasy worlds, too.
