One of the releases we know very little about is Rise of an Empire , a spin-off of the blockbuster Director Zack Snyder did not return to the helm, with Noam Murro stepping in. However, Rodrigo Santoro , who reprises his role as Xerxes, said this follow-up will still "match up" with the original blockbuster, revealing there is a point where both movies intersect. Especially because they're calling it like a spinoff, you get bits of the first movie. There's a place where they meet, the first movie and the second movie, but it's a different director.

Despite Snyder handing over the directorial reigns on the sequel to Noam Murro Smart People and contenting himself with co-writing and executive producer duties, that sharp visual style remains in the sequel, Rise of an Empire. King Leonidas and his troops lay dead at Thermopylae, and the Persian army, led by King Xerxes Rodrigo Santoro continues to threaten Greece with an overwhelming ground and sea force. Chronologically though, the film starts 10 years earlier, when a Greek soldier named Themistocles Sullivan Stapleton kills the Persian king Darius, and inadvertently sets young Xerses on the road to vengeance. While the story is somewhat convoluted, the highlight of Rise of an Empire is the action. During the bloody moments — and there are many — that slowdown effect is also used to over-accentuate the spray of blood, which often comes out like a geyser, making it borderline parody. It defuses any sense of horror the audience may be feeling from watching people butchered on screen with body parts flying everywhere, and allows them to cheer the brutality in what is essentially the middle part of an ongoing war. Rise of an Empire is appropriately unapologetic in its violence, offering plenty of scenes of stylized carnage in keeping with its predecessor. The blood and guts approach is strengthened by a fitting soundtrack from Junkie XL that helps set the tone of the battles as equal parts epic and hopeless. When the film slows down and moves into the character-driven territory though, the flaws appear. Leonidas was gregarious and larger than life, which fit with the general tone of the movie. All the Spartans carried a swagger that armored them where loin clothes apparently could not. It gave them all an identity, even when the action quickly swallowed them up. He begins as a one-dimensional warrior, and the film ends on the same note. You learn very little about him, nor will you care. There are even moments when the enemy repeatedly refers to Themistocles as a tactical genius thanks to the earlier battles in the film, but those same battles are generally as simple as the Greeks kill more Persians.

Leonidas throws his spear at Xerxes, slicing his face to prove the God-King 's mortality. The score has caused some controversy in the film composer community, garnering criticism for its striking similarity to several other recent soundtracks, including James Horner and Gabriel Yared 's work for the film Troy. But, you might ask: "The handsome man all die already what! Is this a prequel? Or is this a movie about their spirits? Their ghosts fight in hell ar? In , only the Spartans were featured. However, in this movie, the Athens are the main characters.

I may have recently voiced too much hate for Zack Snyder as a director. Don't worry, I still think he is an amoeba of a filmmaker, not really worthy of serious time or money, but nonetheless living and capable of film-based reproduction. Even after railing against the original and promising and equally offensive sequel , I didn't know how bad an action movie could get without Snyder directing. But before I pick out the leather-bound and hopelessly sexist problems of Rise of an Empire , let me give the series the cultural history it does not deserve. Because studies have shown again and again that Americans will believe anything , here's a friendly PSA: is NOT historically accurate.
