When the Spanish Conquistadores landed in what is now known as Mexico years ago, they found the Aztecs and Meso-American civilizations displaying skulls in a ritual that appeared to mock death. Historically falling in the ninth month of the Aztec Solar Calendar, approximately the beginning of August, the Dia de los Muertos was celebrated for the whole month. Skulls were used to symbolize death and rebirth. Unlike the Spaniards, who viewed death as the end of life, the indigenous peoples viewed it as a continuation of life. However, the Spanish Conquistadores deemed the ritual to be sacrilegious, and the Aztecs to be barbaric pagans.
All Souls' Day , also called The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed , [2] is a day of prayer and remembrance for the faithful departed, [3] observed by Christians on 2 November. Odilo of Cluny in the 10th century, many Catholic congregations celebrated All Souls' Day on various dates during the Easter season as it is still observed in some Eastern Orthodox Church , Eastern Catholic and Eastern Lutheran churches. In the Catholic Church , " the faithful " refers essentially to baptized Catholics; "all souls" commemorates the church penitent of souls in purgatory , whereas "all saints" commemorates the church triumphant of saints in heaven. In the liturgical books of the Latin Church it is called the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed Latin : Commemoratio omnium fidelium defunctorum. The Catholic Church teaches that the purification of the souls in purgatory can be assisted by the actions of the faithful on earth. Its teaching is based also on the practice of prayer for the dead mentioned as far back as 2 Maccabees — Saturday of Souls or Soul Saturday is a day set aside for the commemoration of the dead within the liturgical year of the Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic Churches. Saturday is a traditional day of prayer for the dead, because Christ lay dead in the Tomb on Saturday. These days are devoted to prayer for departed relatives and others among the faithful who would not be commemorated specifically as saints. The Divine Services on these days have special hymns added to them to commemorate the departed.
