Over the past few years, major supermarkets have reduced their trading hours as consumers adapted to the simplicity of online shopping. As grocers benefited from the closures of non-essential stores during lockdowns and tiered restrictions, many of them ventured into ecommerce. Tesco recently announced it was launching a new rapid delivery service, Whoosh, which will allow the supermarket chain to deliver groceries to customers within an hour. The Big 4 giant had seen soaring online growth during the pandemic but had, up until now, refrained from following rivals into the on-demand grocery space. Meanwhile, Waitrose recently scrapped its own Zoom rapid delivery business in favour of expanding its tie-up with Deliveroo. Other major grocers, including Morrisons, Aldi and the Co-op, also use delivery operators such as Deliveroo and Uber Eats to reach customers. As consumers adapted to digital, it appears as though grocers are shifting increasingly following suit by reducing store opening hours and instead investing in ecommerce. Last year, Tesco reduced the opening hours of hundreds of its hour stores.

Normal night time activities - such as refilling shelves - will continue in the supermarkets so Tesco says the impact on employees will be "minimal". The move is Tesco's latest effort to turn around its business which has been hit by challenges on several fronts. The outlets affected will close between midnight and 6am and four hundred staff will be "affected". Tesco says it will do its best to make sure all staff affected are "found a new position either in their existing store or stores local to them". There are currently about Tesco stores open 24 hours a day. This is the latest step in chief executive Dave Lewis' shake-up of the supermarket's business. Since he joined the company in September he has put Tesco's focus on price cuts and putting more staff in stores in an attempt to revive the company's fortunes.

Tesco has reportedly said it will implement a hour opening time at over of its stores in the run-up to Christmas. The Big 4 grocer will have over of its largest-format stores trade for 24 hours a day from December 14 to Christmas Eve, while the remainder of stores extend opening hours an hour early from 5am until 11pm, Retail Week reported.
