Figured I didn't have much to lose, and it would burn through 1 quart every miles. Ran it at RPM for 15 minutes after it reached operating temperature, kept an eye on the oil pressure light and listened for strange noises. Drained the oil, and the oil that had been squeaky clean about 20 minutes earlier came out black as ink.
2.4 ecotec oil consumption fix
GM made updates to its 2. As the crankcase's oil level drops owners experience bucking at low speeds, engine knocks and ticks, fouled-up spark plugs, and irreversible damage to critical components like the timing chain. And it's all made worse by an oil level monitoring system that doesn't do a darn thing until it's too late. There is good news, however, as multiple settlements have extended protections to certain owners. Let's take a look back at how we got here. GM switched to direct-injection for the 2. The new design relied heavily on low-tension oil control rings, spray jets, and a positive crankcase ventilation system to lower fricition, increase efficiency, and boost performance. Each piston has multiple control rings to maintain compression, transfer heat, and keep oil out of the combustion chamber. That last responsibility falls on the oil control ring which is found at the bottom of the control ring stack. As the piston moves up and down, the oil control ring scrapes oil off the cylinder walls and prevents it from exiting the crankcase. But the oil control rings GM chose are way too thin and wear down quickly allowing gaps to form in the ring's coating. Those gaps allow oil to sneak past and burn up in the combustion chamber. To make matters worse, the Ecotec engine uses oil cooling jets to reduce piston temperatures. Lower temeratures means less fricition. Less fricition means longer durability and increased performance.

Refilled with fresh oil and a new filter, and I can report that after miles, there is NO noticeable change in the oil level.

The 2. General Motors produced this 2. At the basis of the 2. Like the original 2. It has a cast aluminum cylinder block with a highly rigid lower crankcase a reinforced "Gen II" block. The engine block also features direct-mounted accessories. Early engines were equipped with GKN forged connecting rods.

The class action alleges defective piston rings are prone to premature wear and excessive engine oil consumption that causes damage to the Ecotec engines. The consolidated class action lawsuit arose from three separate actions: Berman v. General Motors, Hindsman v.
Deals Forum. Yeah, unless you're barely over. Less fricition means longer durability and increased performance. Lee F 27 Replies. The coverage included any costs needed to replace the engine's 4 piston assemblues which is a time-consuming and expensive job. Major class action law firms use this data when researching cases. That last responsibility falls on the oil control ring which is found at the bottom of the control ring stack. OK, Now What? Email this Page. It will only get worse.
I congratulate, very good idea
I think, that you are not right. I suggest it to discuss. Write to me in PM, we will communicate.
Bravo, your idea is useful
