The Game Awards was an award show that honored the best video games of It was produced and hosted by Geoff Keighleycreator and producer of The Game Awards2018 game of the year, and was held to an invited audience at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on December 6, The event was live streamed across more than 45 digital platforms. Keighley began planning for the show immediately after the previous ceremonyand spent months traveling to studios around the world to secure announcements and trailers.

It is given to a video game judged to deliver the best experience across creative and technical fields. The award is traditionally accepted by the game's directors or studio executives. The process begins with over video game publications and websites, which collectively name six games as nominees. Since its inception, the award has been given to ten video games. Publishers Electronic Arts and Sony Interactive Entertainment have won the award twice, the latter being nominated a record twelve times, while FromSoftware is the only developer with more than one win.

And in some ways, it is--but it's remarkable for the ways in which it isn't.
